I'm so excited to announce this wonderful panel of speakers for the 2014 Savvy Sisterhood Alys Beach Workshop! 

Tomorrow I'll tell you more about each speaker and what they will be teaching the attendees. We are thrilled to have these talented ladies join us! 

Registration will be open on Thursday, Dec 19th!

If you would like to be on the email list to have access to early registration, email me at thesavvyphotographer@gmail.com (subject line...Savvy Workshop). The prices for the workshop start at $1400 and go up according to the size bed you choose. There is a VERY LIMITED number of beds at the lower price range. The bunk beds are the lowest price and we only have a few to offer. If you are wanting to attend and save money, consider sharing a king bed with a friend!

Are you ready to attend the next Savvy workshop?

Monday is the day...we will announce the speakers and the details of the next Savvy workshop! I can give you a few details now...

The location~ Alys Beach, Florida (we LOVED it there!)
The dates~ February 22-25th, 2013 (still not confirmed dates but will be confirmed by Monday)
It will be a three night stay and two full days of learning plus 2 half days...and it will be a life changing week for you and your business! 

The ticket sales will start at 1pm EST Monday, October 29th.

The experience I had at the Savvy Sisterhood Workshop was so positive and inspiring. I really went into the workshop ready to learn all about business - I didn't think about the"sisterhood" aspect, but it had the biggest impact on me. From my own housemates, to the other attendees, to the speakers -everyone was so honest, open and giving. It was invaluable to be able to talk with a wide variety of speakers and learn the business from many different aspects. These speakers gave so much of their time and continue to offer it after the workshop is over.  I love that I am now part of a small community of photographers that are constantly looking to improve and be inspired. I really enjoyed so many aspects of the workshop and continue to enjoy the camaraderie that it offers even after it is over. Not only did I walk away with an an extremely large amount of new information that changed the way I look at photography, but I met 30+ women who share the same passions and struggles that I do. I attended the Savvy workshop with apprehension, as I had been in business for almost 4 years and what I was doing was working well enough.  I committed to attending because something was missing in my business, I wasn't totally sure what was missing, but it was. As I arrived, I immediately felt taken in and welcomed by some of the top photographer business women in the industry.  They were very
available to answer questions both during their talks and even on break.  One of the best things about the workshop is that the speakers never felt detached from the event, they were very connected and honest with both their successes, struggles and failures.  The workshop was amazing and I would go every year if I could!

I had such an amazing week at the Savvy Workshop!  This is definitely one of my favorite workshops I have attended since starting my business five years ago.  Marsha is amazing at planning this event, down to every detail.  The location was absolutely gorgeous - I am dying to take my family back for vacation and/or plan a girls trip with my friends!  The speakers were fabulous, approachable and ready to share!  I loved the variety of topics and the small, relaxed dynamic of the group.  Thank you, marsha, for making the workshop so fabulous!

The Savvy Sisterhood Workshop is a lady photographers dream!  It was amazing to be around 20 plus like minded woman, who own and operate their own photography business.  Although there was photo talk the entire time, it didn't feel like work!  The environment allowed everyone to learn, discuss and reflect.  I know for me, a wife and a mother of 3, quiet time to reflect is rare & priceless.  And to have woman who "get it" to bounce ideas off of was incredible.  This workshop was everything that it said it would be and more. The deepest connection for me was meeting mommies that were juggling it all.  We all gave each other personal advice and support.  Amazing!!  Marsha Mifsud has a gift for bringing people together.  By the end we all truly felt like sisters.  I will cherish my time at this workshop forever.  It was a game changer for me!

Savvy Workshop 2012 Mpixpro

Finding a lab you love is one of the most challenging parts of running a photography business. They produce what you create and if that product isn't high quality, then you fail your client in delivering a superb product. When I found Millers and Mpixpro, I knew I had discovered a great find. welcome Savvy Speaker Laura Winslow!

Welcome Savvy Workshop 2012 speaker Laura Winslow to the Savvy blog! We have fallen in love with the fun and colorful style that Laura displays in all of her work. She is a photographer from Phoenix, Arizona and has also created a popular blog which is a favorite destination for photographers with her wall art inspiration and packaging ideas!

Will you share with us how you started your career in photography?
Like many photographers, I feel I have always been interested in photography.  
I would secretly take my mother's old cameras--the first was that kind with the flash bulbs that you could see melt right after each use!--and photograph anything that I thought was fun.  I made my little sister pose on the ottoman in front of the open door, asked her to jump off the diving board countless times so I could get her hair just the right way in motion...it makes me giggle thinking back on how I really have loved photography for so long. When our son was born, my husband bought me my first DSLR and he became my new muse. When we moved to Arizona and I stopped teaching, I longed for something to do creatively.  My photography business was born and really blossomed.  

Did you attend any workshops or seminars that made a big difference in your business?
I studied World Politics and Spanish in college, and have taken a number of classes on diplomacy.  This background, coupled with the fact that I have moved 17 times, helps the most with my business.  You can certainly develop your technical and artistic skills with so many wonderful workshops out there, but one of the most important things about running a business is how you interact with people.  There is a certain amount of diplomacy that goes with that--whether or not you are successful depends a great deal on how you react to people.  Can you stand your ground and get your point across while at the same time making people happy? How do you deal with uncomfortable situations or situations where clients have questions? Being able to remain professional and have happy clients in the end is all about diplomacy in a way.

What do you think makes your business stand out from the other photographers in your area? 
 I think if you are true to yourself, your style and vision, then really it doesn't matter who else is out there. There are so very many wonderful photographers in the Phoenix area, and I really do think there are plenty of clients for everyone.  I have found that each of my clients have a similar sense of style to me, which is so fun and a reflection of what I put out there. I am fortunate that my clients give me creative control and really trust me. This allows me to create what I love, which in turn attracts clients with an appreciation of what I do.  We always have fun and they feel like--and in many cases become--friends.  I also think it is important to, after a certain point, not visit other blogs too much as it can really get people down.  To remain different and true to what YOU want to do, try not to compare yourself to others.  

Who or what inspires you as a photographer?
Everyday color and objects really inspire me, as can a new location--or even being able to see different things in an old location to make it new.

What are your favorite subjects to photograph?
I am so drawn to photographing the innocence and curiosity that children naturally have.  Each session is different and I love shadowing them, seeing where our session will lead...

What are you favorite products that you offer your clients? 
A popular product that I offer are Image Boxes. My digital collection is presented in a custom image box from MpixPro with the custom DVD and a 5x7 print of each image in their gallery. Clients love them--they are beautiful, personal, unique and they like collecting them from each session.

Your blog has become one of the most well known photography blogs and we love visiting to read and see all of your great ideas... where do you find that inspiration? 
Wow, that is too sweet--thanks! I still see my blog as just a fun little spot where I like to share sessions, things that I find inspiring and interesting and fun little perks for my readers in the form of giveaways.  I really feel it is a reflection of me and of my personality and what I love. It's my cozy little corner of the vast internet, and I am always dreaming about what I will do next. I value being different and fresh, so I just try to find things that maybe are slightly new from what has been done before.  I just try to think of what I like, then share it!

I shoot with a Canon 5DmkII

Favorite thing in your camera bag? 
My Canon 50 1.2 L lens

What's your Savvy indulgence?
I love my manis and pedis! I am slightly boring with my fingernails and tend to go through phases where I get the same ol' color--for awhile it was french manicures, then black (even though the ladies at the nail salon tried to talk me out of it every.single.time, saying I was "too happy" for a color like that), now it is a summery and fun hot-pinkish.  I like to have fun with my toes, though. I love a little "flower power" added, I've tried zebra stripes (hated those after the first day!), polka dots and funky colors. It's a fun way to express yourself and I looove the massage chairs! Oh, and pretty, fluffy and colorful pillows!! I have waaay too many!

Will you share with us the proudest or most memorable moment of your career?
Really, if you love what you do and have dreams for what you want in life, things that happen are completely amazing, awesome and exciting--it is always lots of fun when a new opportunity emerges and I am so humbled when I am offered new projects.  They really are all so memorable, but as a photographer, one of the most exciting things that can happen is when a client returns year after year for a session. It is an incredible feeling to know that your photography style and perspective is fully understood and appreciated. I also had the opportunity to photograph a sweet and special little boy, Broxton.  Broxton and his family are my next-door neighbors and they possess a strength and courage that I am sure they wish they never had to have.  I photographed Broxton fewer than three months before he was to pass away, just after his second birthday.  The session was incredibly difficult for me in the sense that it was so emotional and important and you just don't want to break down when you know their pain is so great and profound.  When Broxton passed, his mom asked me to photograph his funeral.  It was a beautiful celebration of his life with so many poignant moments and I feel so blessed to have been able to capture those moments for them.  His brother will have those to look back on for what he won't remember, which was one of Kristi's intentions.  As a photographer, it really brings home how very much photographs mean and you see the greater picture, so to speak.

Meet Savvy speaker Stephanie Fisher

We want to welcome Stephanie Fisher to the Savvy blog! Stephanie is a photographer in the Birmingham area who specializes in photographing newborns. We are thrilled she will be joining us in Alys beach at the Savvy workshop to teach us all about the world of newborn photography.

Welcome Stephanie! Will you share with us how you started your career in photography?

I have always loved photography- for as long as I can remember.  I purchased my first DSLR in 2006 and just couldn’t get enough of it.  I loved photographing not only my baby girl but all of my friends as well.  It really made me realize that being a photographer was my true calling and I officially started to portfolio-build for my business starting in May of 2007.  I have been in business for over 5 years now and loving every minute of it.

Did you attend any workshops or seminars that made a big difference in your business? 

 I have only attended a couple of workshops but both were so inspirational.  I went to a workshop in California in 2008 and it was so inspiring- from learning and sharing about our businesses to all of the wonderful friends made that weekend.  In January 2009 I attended Kelley Ryden’s newborn workshop and just to watch her and Tracy in action was amazing.  I am really a “hands on” learner so to be able to watch them work with babies was awesome.  I also attend WPPI in Vegas and Imaging USA each year and attend different classes to brush up on things and get new ideas.

What do you think makes your business stand out from the other photographers in your area?

I believe one of our biggest things that makes our business stand out would be the relationships we build with our clients.  I feel like I have made so many wonderful friends over the past 5 years.

Who or what inspires you as a photographer?

 Definitely my little girl Hannah, who is now 6.  She has definitely made the saying “they grow up so fast” very true!  These photos capture a moment in time that we can never get back.

What are your favorite subjects to photograph?

 I love newborns and babies.  My favorite “baby” age other than newborn would have to be around 6 months when they are just sitting up.  (and they can sit, but not run away from me yet!)  Pure sweetness!

What are your favorite products that you offer your clients?

I love our gallery wrapped canvases for an easy, beautiful ready-to-hang portrait for your wall and I also love our mini accordion brag books.  They are perfect for grandparents gifts.  And gosh, I still love good old fashioned prints.  We do offer digital files and recommend them for archival purposes but I just love being able to give clients a box full of beautiful portraits and albums!

Do you shoot with Canon or Nikon? 

Nikon!

Favorite thing in your camera bag? 

My 50mm 1.4 lens.  It’s my favorite lens for shooting inside the studio!

Will you share with us the proudest or most memorable moment of your career?

In 2009 I won Photographer of the Year for Heart Gallery of Alabama- they work with children who are to be adopted and are looking for their forever homes.  At the awards ceremony that evening they said that I had the highest number of children adopted out of those I had photographed that year.  How amazing to know that my photographs helped connect them with their forever families.

I am so excited to be a part of the Savvy Sisterhood!  I will be speaking to you all about newborn and baby photography.  I will show you all how I work with newborns from setting up, posing, lighting, etc. and also discuss how we work with babies of different stages.  I will also tell you all about the business side and how I built up my photography business and became one of the most sought out baby photographers in the area.  Can’t wait! 

Savvy Workshop speaker~ Leslie Kerrigan

We are so excited to have Leslie Kerrigan  join us as a speaker at the 2012 Savvy Workshop in Alys Beach! Leslie is a writer for the Savvy blog and the face behind Leslie Kerrigan Photography and Seniorologie, a blog dedicated to the study of senior portrait photography. 

Will you share with us how you started a career in photography?

I began my career not unlike a lot of other photographers out there...I had kids and decided that I couldn't resist their cute little faces and had to capture them all the time! :)  I remember being interested in photography even in college but heard the professor was hard.  And since I liked to be social a little more than I liked to study, I decided taking the course was not a great idea!  So I fiddled around with my dad's old film camera, asked a friend to share some tips and read a book.  I remember practicing my new hobby on a visit to Colorado.  I must have ruined a million packs of film.  The photos were horrible and I gave up.  Fast forward to when I had my kids, I decided to try it again.  This time with digital and the hope that I would be able to try it out without going bankrupt on film.  I started out playing around with posing and lighting but only used my point and shoot camera.  I had no idea what I was doing!  I spent a week at my in-laws house in Indiana and was glued to the computer.  I was trying to soak in as much information as I could, and becasue my in-laws were busy playing with the kids, I had some time to spend on the computer!  I stumbled upon two blogs that really helped me out in the beginning and are still my favorites to this day...The Savvy Photographer and The Pioneer Woman.  Both really inspired me and taught me things I didn't even know I needed to know to be able to take great photos.  I practiced all that week in Indiana and one of my favorite images to this day was of my two boys and it was taken in front of a beautiful old barn with my point and shoot.  That was in the fall and that Christmas, I received my first DSLR.  Every since then I have continued to learn and practice my craft!

We love your blog for senior portrait photographers, Seniorologie...how did you come up with the idea for it?

I love to write.  I actually have a degree in Journalism and Mass Communications.  I was blogging for this fabulous blog, The Savvy Photographer and I loved it.  I started thinking of ways that I could create something different and something that would appeal to senior photographers because that was the area of photography I was passionate about.  I wanted to learn about it and figured others did too.  So Seniorologie was born!

Did you attend any workshops or seminars that made a big difference in your business?

I love workshops!  I always learn something at every one that I attend.  The very first workshop I ever attended was Nichole Van's workshop!  It was in Orlando and it was fabulous.  I remember being extremely overwhelmed at first because I was so new and didn't know some of the things she was talking about.  I was too embarrassed to ask the questions so I asked my roommate after each day of the workshop!  But after I got up the courage to ask the questions, I was able to really learn a ton!  Since then I have been to other workshops and photography events such as WPPI.  I love any chance to learn and no matter where I am in my career, I always feel like I can learn more!


Who or what inspires you as a photographer?

I am inspired by lots of things!  Fashion magazines are a favorite of mine so I definitely like to find inspiration there.  I also love Pinterest, but then again who doesn't!  I am also inspired by my clients and what they love!!

What are your favorite subjects to photograph?

I love photograph seniors!  I like the one-on-one aspect that senior photography provides.  I love working with that age group as they are up for anything and usually like having their photos taken!

What are you favorite products that you offer your clients?

I love mini accordion albums!  Most of my clients get them for moms, grandmothers and mother-in-laws!  It is such a great thing to put in your purse and have with you at all times!  Just pull it out and show off your photos!

Favorite thing in your camera bag?

I love my camera and my 85 and 50 mm lenses!

What's your Savvy indulgence?

I love anything chocolate!  And I also am addicted to Coke!

Meet Savvy Workshop speaker~ Jamie Schultz

It is my pleasure to welcome back Jamie Schultz to Savvy blog.
I am so excited that Jamie will be joining us at the 2012 Savvy workshop in Alys Beach.
Anyone that has met Jamie knows what a delightful person she is to be around and we are blessed to have her join us.

Now let's talk with Jamie~

Will you share with us how you started a career in photography and graphic design?  
Photography is something I've dabbled in since I was in high school.  Despite an obvious draw to photography as a hobby I never considered it as a career choice.  Instead I focused on my dream of becoming a teacher.  While working as a high school history teacher I continued to develop my photography skills and eventually made the decision to leave my teaching position in order to pursue a career in photography.  Early on in my business I discovered that my clients often wanted personalized, unique custom birth announcements, holiday cards, books, etc...  As I started designing custom pieces for my clients I found fellow photographers asking to purchase files from me to use with their own clients which is how Jamie Schultz Designs was born.  

Did you attend any workshops or seminars that made a big difference in your business?
I've attended several seminars over the years, but I've only attended one workshop and it was one that changed the course of my portrait work along with my business model.  It was a workshop put on by the one and only Cheryl Jacobs who challenged me to be more authentic with my clients and to provide them with an experience like none other.  Attending her workshop was easily the most influential to my business.  

What do you think makes your business stand out from the other photographers in your area? 
This is a tough question for me to answer because I make it a point not to look too closely at what other photographers in my area are doing. I've found that when I do that it takes focus away from what is most important to me which is making an authentic connection with my clients and delivering products specifically suited for them.  When I start looking at what other photographers are doing I tend to get flustered and feeling pressure to try things that aren't necessarily natural for me, nor is it something my clients want from me.  

The one thing I will say that I'm hearing directly from my clients is how much they appreciate the fact that I'm a full-service studio.  It seems more and more photographers are simply burning a disc of images and leaving the responsibility of printing to the client.  In the past several months I've heard from several clients who have worked with photographers who sold them a digital package and they have yet to do anything with the images on the disc.  I think it's refreshing that portrait clients are realizing the value of printed products and appreciate that there are still photography studios out there who offer professional printing services.  

Who or what inspires you as a photographer?
The thing that inspires me the most as a photographer is authenticity.  There is nothing better to me than capturing honest emotions...whether it's a pout, concentration, a belly laugh, or a genuine smile.  It's taken a lot of practice over the years finding ways to genuinely connect with people in a relatively short amount of time but it's the one thing that inspires me at the start of each and every session.  

What are your favorite subjects to photograph?
High school seniors are always a lot of fun for me to photograph!  As I mentioned above, I used to be a high school teacher and so I find that I have an easy time connecting with seniors.  

What are you favorite products that you offer your clients?
My entire business is based on word of mouth referrals which often come from clients who send out birth announcements, holiday cards, and/or graduation announcements so obviously I love selling those!  Albums and coffee table books are also one of my favorite products because I love knowing that my clients will enjoy looking back at their session images over the years and someday the book will be passed on to future generations.

I'm a Canon girl!

Favorite thing in your camera bag?
My new FOTOstrap!!  After what felt like an endless search for a comfortable strap I FINALLY found one that I love.  

What's your Savvy indulgence?
BOOKS!  

How do you balance running a successful photography business, the absolute best design shop for photographers (Jamie Schultz Designs) , a wildly popular food blog (This Lunch Rox) and being a great mom to two young boys?
This is a great question...and one I'm asked often.  I have to tell you that I really believe that it's the combination of my three brands that keep me balanced.  There was a time when I was operating Jamie Schultz Photography and Jamie Schultz Designs and my life was a bit of a mess.  My schedule was chaotic and I found it nearly impossible to be in the moment with my family. The stress of keeping up with the demands of my business was taking a toll on me both physically and mentally.  Because of that I allowed myself and my family to fall victim to convenience foods (i.e. anything but healthy).   I reached a point where I knew something needed to change and I decided to start with the way we were eating.  I did a lot of reading about how food impacts our bodies and was inspired to make major changes.  It took a lot of hard work to transition to healthier eating habits, but soon I was feeling much more focused and energized.  All of which made operating my businesses a lot easier to do than when I was surviving on a diet consisting mostly of caffeine and sugar!   

In an effort to get my kids to try new foods I starting cutting food into small bite-sized shapes...which eventually carried over to creating fun lunches for my boys to take to school which is how This Lunch Rox started.  Having said that the site has really become much more than just cute lunches for me.  As a working mother of two young boys I find I have very little time to do something I love.  Some moms find creative outlets in projects like scrapbooking, quilting, beading, etc...  Planning and preparing creative lunches for my boys is something I'm passionate about and provides me with an escape from the pressures of work.  In the book, "The Happiness Poject", author Grethen Rubin writes "...happiness research predicts that making time for a passion and treating it as a real priority instead of an "extra" to be fit in at a free moment (which many people practically never have) will bring a tremendous happiness boost."  I couldn't agree more!  Working on these lunches brings me joy and allows me (a person who rarely makes time for herself) a chance to do something I love which in turn helps me stay focused and feel more balanced in my daily life.  

Will you share with us the proudest moment of your career?
I'll never forget the moment when I delivered a coffee table book to a family whose son had just passed away from cancer.  The boy's father met me at the door and when he saw the book he immediately broke down crying and told me that never in his life could he ever receive a more meaningful gift.  That was easily the proudest moment in my career knowing that I was able to capture this boy and his family and the images are ones they will treasure for a lifetime.

I'm so excited to join all of you for the Savvy Workshop where I'll be sharing information on how I transformed my business model and achieved a level of success I never dreamed possible.  During the presentation I will discuss the importance of understanding expectations and the role this plays in creating a lasting experience for clients.  Specifically, I will detail strategies for gathering crucial client information that will help you create products to ultimately increase your profitability.
