{the power of pink}

This does not seem to be photography related~ but who can resist some beach inspired decorating...certainly not me. My Beach House Canvases are on their way. {just wish I had a beach house to put them in}...my walls will be beach inspired soon! I will share pictures once they arrive. My heart is always beach inspired...can't wait to get back to the sand. We are heading out of here in two months for the big move to Japan. Before we head across the world, we will get a nice month long vacation on the Gulf Coast. I am so looking forward to this! Good friends and great family members to spend time with...and a big {i mean big} birthday for me...not sure how I feel about leaving my thirties. They were good to me! My sweet baby turned four last week. We all know it goes too fast. I came across this article last year from Phoebe Howard about her daughter growing up and the need to recreate part of her past. I am decorating my daughters room now that she is a "big" girl {even though we are moving} and this story really hit home to me...sooner than I'd like she will be grown. Brings a tear to my eye...many tears...she is such a joy and delight to this family full of boys. The power of pink holds true in this house...enjoy the story.

"The subconscious mind can really play tricks
on you when you least expect it.
As I stood in this room that I decorated for the Atlanta Symphony Show house, it suddenly became
alarmingly obvious to me what I had actually created.
It was not a room designed for a teenage girl as an ethereal oasis to protect and shelter her from the trials of being thirteen. My concept was to use pink in a way that was not sticky or sweet, but quite current and hip.
It would be feminine and pretty, but not girly.
The room would be a serene cocoon, but the tone would be stylish. This was what I had set out to design,
but in fact the outcome was something quite different.
Eighteen years earlier my beautiful daughter Nellie was born, my second child, and I was completely overjoyed.
I desperately wanted her to be a girl
and was not afraid to admit it.
I had four brothers and had always longed for a sister -
no such luck. We did not know that she was a girl, four sonograms failed to identify her, and I had done the unthinkable. I decorated the nursery completely and
entirely for a girl. I painted the walls the dreamiest shade of shell pink, painted the ceiling light grey, and the trim white.
I hung sheer white billowy batiste curtains at the windows.
I dressed her crib and the iron bed in white linen.
A faded needlepoint rug lay on the floor, and I covered tufted furniture in creamy soft fabrics. It was a risky move,
to decorate that way, and everyone was worried what might happen. I was never concerned.
When the joyous day arrived, and I carried that baby
into that nursery, my world was absolutely perfect.
She was beautiful, healthy, and I was intoxicated with the purest form of true happiness and love.
I spent many months in that room with my little girl,
and the hours melted away.
The light was perfect, and the room was so warm and enveloping, in a calm and simple way.
I was lucky, and I would never forget it.
When I walked in to my room at the show house,
that was when it hit me. I had recreated her nursery,
one month before her graduation from high school.
We were about to be empty nesters. The walls were pink,
the ceiling grey, and the trim white. Billowy white sheers draped the bed, and hung at the windows.
An old oushak lay on the floor, and tufted furniture
was covered in soft fabrics. It took my breath away.
As I realized what I had done, and the tears streamed down my face, I suddenly knew that it was going to be alright,
and that I would be able to let her go.
I had been a good mother, and my nest would never be empty.
I could let her go. So I knew that my room would touch others in a different way than I had envisioned.
Mothers with daughters would visit my room, be able to embrace their feminine side and paint rooms pink with full abandon. Pink is a color that actually has many layers,
and not necessarily sweet. For me it was such a surprise,
I still smile when I think of my shock when I entered that room.
Who would have thought that pink could be so powerful?"

meet {and greet} Alicia Caine

We are thrilled to welcome to Alicia Caine from Great Falls, Montana.
Tell us about your style of photography? My life is crazy- so I like to find the calm in my images. As much as I love happy fun images, I just don't seem to capture these types of things. I can't even shoot angles for some reason- I have to have everything perfectly lined up. Someone described my style as a modern classic. I like my colors soft and sunkissed, and my black & whites dark and moody.

How long have been a photographer?I bought my first DSLR in December of 2005 and started my business in May of 2006.

Best marketing idea? I have yet to find a golden marketing idea that works for everyone. The best thing that I have done for my business is in lavishing my clients in every way that I can so that they walk away from the experience on a high and do my marketing for me through word of mouth. For the last 2 years, all my clients have been from word of mouth.

Worst marketing idea?A photographer that was teaching online workshops highly recommended doing Fresh Faces cards for portfolio building/marketing and handing them out to random strangers in mass quantities. Swore that this is how she grew her business. Free session + free 8X10. I did this one month handing out about 100 cards and doing about 25 sessions. I made $300 in sales that month and not a single client ever hired me again once they had to pay. Everyone happily took the free 8X10 and I'm sure scanned the living daylights out of them. Fortunately, I did get a lot of experience that month in what not to do in terms of attracting paying clients and I really grew my skills as a photographer in a short amount of time. So at least some good came out of it, despite the fact I nearly killed myself in the process. (That's my horror story and I'm sticking to it.)

Do you work out of a studio or your home? I currently am back to working out of my home. I had a natural light studio that I closed last fall due to us moving. I was only using the studio for shooting newborns in and all my other sessions are outdoors, so it was kind of a wasted space. It was fun while I had it- but I discovered that a studio for me wasn't necessary.

Do you feel having a studio made your business grow? Not at all. Maybe if I had it on the main street downtown (which would have cost me 4X as much for rent), it might have given me better exposure. I think all it did for me was just give me credibility with my clients, but then, since most of my clients came from word of mouth- I already had it. I love the convenience of having a studio, but I don't think it grows a business, just creates more overhead. With the extra clients I was taking on because of it, I was still coming out with the same income than when I was working out of my house after all my expenses.

Any regrets on having the studio? No way! I loved the experience and it was my dream to have one. Once I obtained it, the dream felt somewhat hollow and I realized that just dreaming about having a studio was setting my sights too low. It helped me to see that I could think bigger!
What do you think makes a photographer successful?Solid pricing strategy and an always-growing business plan.

Do you twitter? Facebook?http://www.twitter.com/AliciaCaine http://www.facebook.com/aliciacaine

WHAT’S YOUR…

Savvy indulgence?Sephora. I walk in the store and I hear angels sing.

Ideal getaway? My husband and I have still not had our honeymoon after 9 years of marriage. I don't care where we get away to- I just want to get away for a week of just him & I. I keep having babies, so this keeps getting harder and harder to make happen. One day- one day!

Are you a Nikon or Canon girl? Which model do you use?Canon! Currently I have the 5D- waiting for the 5DII to go down in price some more before I get it. I'm cheap.

Favorite lens? I shoot with my 85mm f/1.8 more than anything else. I guess that it would make it my favorite?

Any children? How many?I currently have 4 children (ages 8, 6, 4, 2) and due to have #5 the middle of June!

How do you balance being a mom and working the long hours we photographers work? The balancing act is becoming more and more of an art form- but something I can't take full credit for as I am blessed to have my hubby home with me full time as my business provides 100% of our income. I couldn't do it without him! Having a schedule (and using a timer) has been a lifesaver for me! I actually included it in my book because I knew it would be an encouragment to so many other mother's in this business that it is possible to balance family & business and retain sanity.
If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be? A business consultant. I love all things business- as long as I can make the task right brained!

Tell us your proudest moment of your career~I have so many! One of my favorite moments was getting to photograph a good friend's birth for her baby with Trisomy 18. The baby was not expected to be born alive, yet she managed to live a miraculous 52 hours. Being able to give my friend the gift of the images and being able to witness the miracle of her birth was something that I will carry with me forever. It was the first time that I felt like my photography was truly a gift from God. My second favorite moment (which is still a far cry from photographing the birth) was the first day that I got a sale that changed the way I thought about pricing and what people are willing to pay for something they value. It wasn't my biggest sale- but it put me on the path that I am now on and teach others about. It literally changed my life.

We would love to hear about your Easy as Pie pricing guide~ can you tell us more?

Easy As Pie actually started as a one-on-one pricing consult as I had a lot of photographers interested in knowing how I was financially profiting & providing 100% of our income from my business with such a limited amount of experience under my belt. I generated over 100K in gross sales my very first year which is really unheard of, especially when the photographer had only a few months of photography experience and zero years of marketing experience. My consults got to the point that I couldn't keep up with how many requests for them and I realized I was repeating a lot of the same basic information over and over, so I decided to put it all in a book form. My heart was for these photographers who were desperately needing their businesses to provide income for them and didn't have the time for trial and error. I first considered doing workshops- but then realized that it would be impractical (and maybe a little hypocritical) to offer workshops on how to make money to photographers who didn't have the money.

Having a .pdf instead of a workshop made it much more feasible for those who couldn't afford workshops and made it easier on me not having to travel and leave my family constantly to do them.

When I wrote Easy As Pie, there was such a need for guidance in the pricing area. I don't think there is anything available to photographers like it. I had no idea the impact it would make on the industry and I am overwhelmed at the e-mails I receive constantly from the photographers who send me their testimonials of how it has not only changed their businesses, but changed things for their family. I feel like my heart could burst in a million pieces every single time! Over 1K sales and not one single negative feedback or review on it. When I heard that a man who had a business PHD said it was the most solid pricing teaching tool he had ever seen- that was a pretty huge moment for me!

Easy As Pie is written from the perspective that I truly believe everyone can think like I do - sometimes common sense just needs to be taught before you can think that way on your own. Once you know the hows and whys of pricing, you are able to create your own unique pricing based on the needs of your own unique business. It's not a one-size fits all type of book. But, what it meets the need of that everyone has is the need to have a business that is profitable without having to do a high volume. It's also written to cover every range of experience, if you are just starting out and need to be put in the right direction or if you have an established business and need to rework things to go to the next level. I truly believe that it is perfect for every single portrait photographer out there- no matter where they are in their business!

Alicia is offering Savvy Readers a coupon code for $75 off the combo {Easy As Pie & Pastry School} for one week! {april 26, 2010- may 3, 2010} Use the code Savvy75off

{beach inspired}

Our newest Canvas Collection is ready! These wonderful "beach inspired" templates are our newest creation...and we LOVE them. {think I can smell the salty air just looking at them}

These are digital frames...you will get 6 templates to create your own Beach House Gallery. The templates are sized for several options of printing~ the square can be printed from 20x20, 16x16, 12x12, 10x10. {the collection contains 3 square frame templates} The other 3 templates are sized 20x24 and 16x20.

The above image shows the frames printed and mounted {not on canvas}. All templates come with the option of printing on a flat print {we recommend mounting them on matboard}. These are great for displaying on easels or "propping" along a mantle or ledge. Each template also has the option of printing on a gallery wrapped canvas. The two inch border has the same "boatwood" look for the wrap around effect.

Our canvas samples are being printed and will be here soon. We will showcase those once they arrive. We are working with a great canvas company to supply these. They are putting the finishing touches on the canvases so you can have them printed directly through them for the perfect canvas.

This is a great new product to boost your sales {and fill your walls}...clients will desire the entire wall collection...that's bigger sales for you! And the best way to sell them, is to show them. Let me know if you'd like a "sell sheet" for your blog showcasing the collection.

The Beach House Collection is $75

Meet {and greet} Stacy Larsen

We are thrilled to welcome Stacy Larsen!
Stacy is a photographer in Tampa, Florida with a fabulous sense of style...just wait until you see the studio! We love her~ and adore her photography! Welcome Stacy!

Tell us about your style of photography?
 Simple, natural, fun.

How long have been a photographer? I bought my first digital camera in 2004 but it took a while before I could say I was a Photographer with a straight face. I have officially been in business for five years.

When you're not photographing, where can we find you? Hanging out with the people I love. As a mom of four kids our lives really revolve around family.

Any books that inspired you {or helped you} in your business? Understanding Exposureby Bryan Peterson gave me first “aha moment“ when I was diving into shooting in manual. Seriously the best book ever.

Best marketing idea? Teaming up with a baby boutique no question. I get a ton of business from them. Word of mouth and building relationships is so important as well. My clients are really my best form of advertising!

Worst marketing idea? Portrait parties. I know they work for some people but not so much for me.

We'd love to hear about your studio...tell us about it? I just opened my studio last November next to a fabulous baby boutique in town. They have been displaying my work and promoting me for years so we already have an amazing relationship and I LOVE working with them. I shoot mostly on location but the light in the studio is amazing so I have the ability to shoot there as well. I have an entrance to the street as well as an interior door to the baby boutique so I leave my doors open even when I am not there so people can walk through and look at products etc. The owners answer basic questions for me and have information they can give to potential clients.

Do you feel having a studio has made your business grow? Absolutely! Since I specialize in maternity and newborn my target market is walking through the doors of the baby boutique every day. It could not be a better location for me. Plus the owners of the boutique are like my own sales people; it is a great partnership.

What do you think makes a photographer successful? I think it is the right combination of talent, passion, determination and business skills. It is definitely not for the faint of heart.

What’s your weakness in this business? All the boring admin stuff that is required to keep the business running smoothly. I do it because I have to but will ultimately hire someone to take over that aspect of the business so I can focus on shooting.

Do you twitter? Facebook? YES! I just started and have to say that I am really getting into it. Social media is such an amazing and important tool and I am excited to see where it takes me.

WHAT’S YOUR…

Savvy indulgence? Sadly it’s the little things that I find indulging like Coke with crushed ice, a pedicure, time alone even if it’s going to Target for no particular reason. A spa day would be nice though if ever I could find the time.

Ideal getaway? The beach makes me feel more at peace than anywhere else; it always has. There is something so calming and peaceful about digging my toes in the sand.

Favorite family ritual? Family movie night. Last weekend we all piled up in our king size bed (minus our nineteen month old who was fast asleep in his crib) and watched “Where the wild things are”. We treasure this time with our kiddos so much and can’t stand how fast they are growing. We can’t wait until our little guy is old enough to indulge in this activity with us as well.

Favorite thing in your closet? My black suede boots that I sadly don’t get to wear often enough in Tampa.

Are you a Nikon or Canon girl? Favorite lens? I am a Nikon girl for sure. I shoot with the Nikon D700 and my favorite lens fluctuates between the 50mm 1.4 and the 28-70 2.8. I love how sharp my 50 is but sometimes I just really want that zoom!

Any children? How many? We have four! Brandon-14, Emily-12, Cade-7 and Brody-19 months. We could not be more in love with them; they are such awesome people with such different and amazing personalities.

As a parent, what do you wish you had more time for? More than anything I wish I had more time to spend as a family away from the demands of our everyday life.

If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be? I would probably still be stuck working in an Orthodontic office like I did for ten years before I was rescued by Photography.

Tell us your proudest moment of your career~ I have to admit that being in a place in my career where I can share what I have learned (good and bad) over the years with budding Photographers is so humbling and amazing.

We would love to hear about your workshop~ LAUNCH...can you tell us more? Of course! I am super excited about Launch. This is the workshop that I wished I had when I was starting out; a platform for beginning photographers to build on their technical, artistic, business and marketing skills that will enable them to set themselves up for lasting success. I really do share it all; nothing is off limits!

and now for my favorite part...the studio!

Thank you Stacy!

Check out Launch~ the workshop!
