Your Name: Julie Afflerbaugh
How would you describe your style of photography?
Classic, natural, sweet
What first drew you in to photography? My love of travel at first. Then in 2004, I got married and adored my wedding photographer. I realized that I could be creative, do something I love and make a living. I left a career in teaching to start my business.
Do you work out of your home or a studio? I have a detached garage next to my home that was converted into a sweet little natural light studio.
Tell us about your business before the Savvy workshop? Before I attended the workshop, I recently had my first baby. I was feeling inspired about being a new Mom, but not so inspired about my business. I was also feeling really overwhelmed about how to balance everything since I wanted to spend as much time as possible with Liam.
How has it changed since returning? I soaked up so much inspiration at the workshop that I came home ready to refocus on improving my work and getting back in touch with what I love about running my own business. Melanie Mauer's presentation about creating a business that enriches our lives was exactly what I needed.
What do you think is the most important thing you learned from the Savvy workshop? I learned how to be more successful at photographing newborns, how to make my brand more consistent, and how to streamline my business so I can spend more time with my family.
What was your favorite part? Meals were a blast. I loved chatting with all the other women.
Favorite Savvy indulgence: expensive dinners out
Favorite place to shop: anthropolgie
Favorite vacation spot: camping on a lake
Favorite blogs to visit: style me pretty, kiss the groom
Favorite subject to photograph: 9-12 month old babies
Favorite products you sell to your clients: books that tell a little story about their family
Favorite thing about being a photographer: being a part of really important times in people's lives
Describe your perfect day: I love sundays. Riding bikes to brunch with family and friends. A lazy afternoon in the backyard playing with Liam. Cooking dinner with my husband. Watching Iron Chef before bed.
