love the...

Oh my...the clothes are so cute right now at Target. Yesterday we shopped...and shopped. Having a 5 year old girl makes passing up the cute clothes there nearly impossible. And the boys clothes are just as irresistible...do you see the green shirt above? Don't tell my daughter but I bought it for her...in the boys department. It looks adorable with the pink converse shoes and shorts (bought both of those)...and she wore it last night with the white skirt (yep, bought it too...with a pink tank under the green gingham shirt).
Have you had your Target fix lately?

go big...or go home

We do our best to convince our clients to go big..really big...but a 16x20 sounds too big to them. I think the best way to convince them big is better is to simply show them.

Make a statement with your images! Fill your walls with the best art around..and go BIG!

So how big is it? 30x40

Where can you get it? If you are a photographer, check out Burrell Imaging. If you aren't a photographer, then find an experienced photographer in your town.

Who is the cutie above? My little 5 year old love...she's a keeper. And if you heard her sing, you would be amazed...yes, I'm bragging...isn't that what Moms are supposed to do?

Where will I hang it? Still haven't decided...I ordered it for my bathroom. I wanted something artsy to fill a blank wall...but it's so amazing in person I don't know if I can keep it hidden away in there. I'll take a picture when I do decide to hang it.

The Studio Tour of Diane Sage

The Studio Tour of Diane Sage

Here's how Diane describes her studio~

"My studio is located in an old converted Mill space that was built in 1901 as part of the Amoskeag Mills in Manchester, NH.  The mill space was designed as a place for wool and fabric production and operated in that capacity until 1935.  In 1936, there was a flood that brought 10 feet of water into the first floor and left 3 feet of sand behind.  In the 19th century, the Amoskeag Mill building was considered the largest mills in the world and line the entire canal with some beautiful large mill spaces that have all been converted into business spaces and studios.

The building is considered a Historic district of Manchester with it's original hardwood floors, 15 foot ceilings and large windows that splash the space with tons of natural light.  I've been renting this space for over 12 years and the space purposely was never built with walls, to keep the creative energy flowing throughout.

The loft space built within the room was a way to take advantage of the vertical space in the building.  I designed the stair case and rails using very commonly found items.  I didn't want just standard spindles so I used metal lawn ornaments that are used in the upper part of the railing and metal floor mats that were built into the design to give the feeling of something totally unique and different.  It feels like a balcony you would find in old New Orleans and I love the overall look.

The space is mostly a meet and greet area for my clients but I also have been using the back area for baby, maternity and boudoir shoots.  There are also other areas in the building, such as the original freight elevator that I also use to shoot in to continue using the gorgeous backdrop this building has to offer.

My studio is designed with a  mix of old and new.  I love taking modern pieces and mixing them with antique items.  The client area is set up with a very modern feel, such as the glass fireplace, the ghost chairs and sleek, white modern sofa but in the upper space area above the closet, I have an original old window from the building before they converted them, antique luggage and a vintage child's bike.  I typically just buy stuff I love and then try and find a way to use them...I have a quirky look but it works for me.  My business is geared more towards weddings which is more on location work but I love having this place to meet with my clients and it's a wonderful place to come to work each day!"

Thank you Diane for sharing the images of the studio with us...we love it!

The Phone...Your Best Free Marketing Tool

The Phone: Your Best Free Marketing Tool
by June Kuiper

Do you avoid talking to your clients on the phone? Do you take a little longer than you should to return a client phone call? Are you afraid that you will say something really foolish on the phone?

If you’ve answered yes to any or all of those questions, please know that I’m right there with you, and truthfully, sometimes the thought of making an an actual phone call can feel downright paralyzing. Who doesn’t love hiding out in one’s pajamas, responding to emails at all hours of the night, between rounds of Words with Friends?

Frankly, today needs to be the day when you take the first steps to overcoming your phone fears. Connecting with clients by phone could possibly one of the most effective, most inexpensive marketing tools at your disposal. And, good news! You can still wear your pajamas when you make a phone call!

We recommend three simple steps for preparing for phoning your clients:

1. Have a reason why you’re calling. Here are some possible topics. Pick one.

  • You’d like to offer them a special session at a special price.
  • You’d like to help them schedule their session for 2012.
  • You’d like to get their feedback on your last session and make sure they’re enjoying their images.
  • You’d like to ask them for a testimonial.
  • You’d like to personally request their referrals.

2. Create a script.

For example, if you’re planning some sort of mini session opportunity, here is a possible script to get you started:

“Good morning, Mary. It’s June. I’ve been thinking about how much fun our photos were last summer. I just adore your family and I wanted you to be the first to know about the mini sessions I have planned. It would be the perfect opportunity to capture some beautiful images of Ava Grace for her two year birthday.”

Preferably, you’d like Mary to schedule a mini session on the spot, but even if Mary doesn’t schedule a session, you’ve made one more connection with her without spending a dime. Don’t be afraid of possible rejection. When Mary thinks of photographers, she is more likely to think of you and your thoughtful attentiveness. Now that’s what marketing is all about.

3. Before you call, practice your script.

Meet with a trusted friend to roleplay. Have your friend act out different responses with you, from reaching voicemail to positive, neutral, and negative responses to your offer. Practice breathing comfortably while you speak and sounding confident and prepared.

4. Follow up with a personal note or email.

Regardless of the response you receive, follow up with each and every person you phoned. Simply let them know you enjoyed re-connecting with them or thank them or provide promised information. Do it right away, within 24 hours.

I challenge you to pick up the phone in the upcoming weeks. In today’s competitive industry, it’s more important than ever to build relationships with our clients. While email and text messages are incredible ways to communicate, there is something extra powerful, extra personal about enjoying genuine conversation with our clients.

If you make some phone calls to your clients in the upcoming weeks, we’d love to hear more about your experience. Share your story with us by emailing info@photographercafe.com, and you could win a $75 shopping spree to the Photographer Cafe shop. Find all sorts of essential marketing tools and beautiful templates at Photographer Cafe.

Images from the Kotori Photo Jewelry booth at Imaging 2012

I still have more images to show of my favorite booths from Imaging 2012...even though it's been almost a month since we went. And next weekend many of you will be leaving for WPPI in Vegas! I will not be joining you...I think I'm still recovering from the great food and lovely cocktails in New Orleans...
I hope you all have a wonderful time...and get to meet many new vendors! Attending trade shows and seeing new products to offer to your clients is a must in this business...you have no idea the wonderful options out there until you see it all in person! You will love it...and be a bit overwhelmed..in a good way!
These images are from the booth of our sweet friends at Kotori Photo Jewelry. They are two of the nicest people and they have fabulous products! If you are not already offering their jewelry line to your clients, you should be...or at least be wearing some yourself!

To learn more about Kotori Photo Jewelry,

I love their latest addition to the collection, The Sallee Pendant!
