meet kimberly petro

Your Name: Kimberly Petro
Location: Northern Virginia

How would you describe your style of photography?
 Light, creative and playful.

What first drew you in to photography?
I've been "into" taking pictures for as long as I can remember but when I started blogging in 2005, I wanted my first big girl camera. I got a Nikon D70 and fell in love.

Do you work out of your home or a studio?
I have an office in my home but I prefer to shoot outside. My home office is where I do my editing, business communications and meet with clients.

Tell us about your business before the Savvy workshop? Before Savvy, I had barely dipped my toe into the deep waters of the professional photography world. It was a hobby I had just turned into a business and I was looking for direction and inspiration.

How has it changed since returning?
Almost 100%. When Joslyn Place Photography originated, I had a business partner. That situation did not work out so I spent most of last year studying, rebranding and learning to embrace my own style.

What do you think is the most important thing you learned from the Savvy workshop? I realized right away that I wanted and needed to be mentored. I had no idea how many resources and how much of a supportive community exsisted online and off. The Savvy Sisters conference left me with such a warm fuzzy that I still look back on it as a big "aha moment" in my life. It was there that I realized that I can be successful on my own.

What was your favorite part? The hands on sessions with Marta Locklear and Mika Beth Edwards. I was so impressed that I immediately went home and booked a one on one mentoring session with Marta which was mind blowing.
Fun facts we want to know about you:

Favorite Savvy indulgence~ Spa Pedicures, hands (and feet) down.

Favorite place to shop~ If I had to pick just one place, I would say Target. My heart belongs to Target...along with my credit card. But if I'm looking for THE perfect outfit, I can always find it at White House/Black Market.

Favorite vacation spot~ #1 The Caribbean, #2 San Francisco

Favorite blogs to visit~,,, and of course, The Savvy Blog :)

Favorite subject to photograph~
My Girls (12 & 16) - I esp. love photographing my daughter when she is on horseback. In my business, Maternity shoots are my favorite.

Favorite products you sell to your clients~
WHCC Standouts - the bigger the better.

Favorite thing about being a photographer~
(Can't get it down to just one thing) Capturing the unexpected perfect moment of someone's day and showing people how beautiful they are.

Describe your perfect day~
Sleeping late, girl time with my daughters, a maternity shoot, spicy thai food for dinner, a motorcycle ride with my husband and then sharing a bottle of red wine in the hot tub looking up at a sky full of stars.
